POST OPERATIVE REHAB
Recovery after surgery is a gradual process. At FITE Health Physiotherapy in Chester-le-Street, we support rehabilitation after musculoskeletal surgery with a plan guided by your procedure, surgical team and goals.
We help you rebuild movement, strength and confidence for everyday activity, work and sport. Progression follows your post-operative instructions and any restrictions on movement or weight bearing.
Bring your discharge information and rehabilitation protocol to your appointment. Early morning and evening appointments are available.

We review your operation, recovery so far, symptoms, surgical instructions and rehabilitation goals. Assessment is appropriate to your stage of healing and may include movement, walking, strength and functional tasks.
Your programme follows the surgeon’s protocol and is adjusted as your recovery progresses. We advise contacting your surgical team if symptoms or progress raise concerns.
Rehabilitation After Surgery
Joint Replacement
A structured plan may support walking, movement, strength and everyday independence after hip or knee replacement.
Ligament and Tendon Procedures
Rehabilitation respects tissue protection and surgical restrictions before progressing strength and function.
Knee and Shoulder Surgery
We tailor exercises and functional goals to the procedure and your recovery stage.
Return to Work and Sport
Progression is based on your surgical guidance, function and the demands of your activities.

Progress and Monitoring
Some discomfort, stiffness and swelling can occur during recovery, but your surgical team’s instructions take priority. We review how you respond to exercise and adjust the plan accordingly.
Contact your surgical team or seek urgent medical advice for increasing wound redness or discharge, fever, unexpected worsening pain or swelling, or other concerns. New chest pain or breathlessness needs emergency help.
We support steady progress towards the activities that matter to you.
Our Treatment Approach
ASSESS
Every plan starts with a full assessment of your symptoms, movement, strength, and history. We take the time to properly understand your pain and your goals, so we can identify the real cause, not just treat the symptoms.
TREAT
We find the cause of your symptoms and provide targeted treatment to ease pain and improve mobility. It includes hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, massage and muscle release, used alongside exercise rather than instead of it.
EDUCATE
We help you understand your condition, so you have the knowledge to manage it yourself.
REBUILD
Your programme may include movement, progressive strengthening, balance, walking and functional exercises. Progression follows your surgical protocol and milestones before introducing more demanding work or sporting tasks.
PREVENT
We work on your movement, strength, and habits to lower the risk of it happening again.
