SLIPPED DISCS

A slipped disc, also called a herniated or prolapsed disc, can cause back or neck pain and sometimes symptoms into an arm or leg. Not every disc change causes symptoms.

At FITE Health Physiotherapy in Chester-le-Street, we assess your symptoms and function and build a personalised plan to help you keep moving and recover confidence.

Rehabilitation may include activity advice, graded movement and strengthening. Where symptoms suggest a need for further investigation, we advise appropriate medical review.

Early morning and evening appointments are available.

We ask how symptoms started, what changes them, and how they affect sleep, work and everyday activity.

Assessment may include spinal movement, strength, walking and nerve function where relevant. We consider your medical history and any existing scan findings alongside your symptoms.

Your plan is tailored to your findings, recovery and goals, with clear advice on progression and when further medical review is needed.

Understanding Disc Related Pain

Discs are cushions between the bones of the spine. A disc can bulge or herniate and may irritate a nearby nerve. Assessment helps determine how this relates to your symptoms.

Back or Neck Symptoms

Pain and stiffness may affect movement and daily activity. We help you find manageable movement and gradually rebuild function.

Arm or Leg Symptoms

Nerve irritation can cause radiating pain, tingling, numbness or weakness. Your assessment guides rehabilitation and the need for medical review.

Returning to Activity

We progress strengthening and functional tasks around your work, exercise and everyday goals.

Symptoms and Recovery

Disc related symptoms may include spinal pain, restricted movement or pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. Recovery varies and is reviewed throughout rehabilitation.

Urgent Medical Advice

Go to A&E or call 999 for new numbness around the genitals or bottom, difficulty passing or controlling urine or stools, or severe or worsening symptoms in both legs. Seek prompt medical review for progressive weakness or other concerning changes.

We support graded activity and self-management while monitoring your progress.

Our Treatment Approach

ASSESS

Every plan starts with a full assessment of your symptoms, movement, strength, and history. We take the time to properly understand your pain and your goals, so we can identify the real cause, not just treat the symptoms.

TREAT

We find the cause of your symptoms and provide targeted treatment to ease pain and improve mobility. It includes hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, massage and muscle release, used alongside exercise rather than instead of it.

EDUCATE

We help you understand your condition, so you have the knowledge to manage it yourself.

REBUILD

Your programme may include back and hip mobility, lower limb strengthening and a graded return to walking, work and exercise. We adjust the progression to your symptoms, function and goals.

PREVENT

We work on your movement, strength, and habits to lower the risk of it happening again.
